Water Treatment Improvements Radium Removal
Meriwether County, Georgia
The City of Warm Springs has utilized its Cold Springs as its water source since
the 1940’s. However in 2009, the City’s water source became in violation of the
Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) rules concerning excess radium
levels in the Cold Springs water supply. The water supply exceeded the
Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) for Combined Radium as well as for Gross
Alpha Particle Activity.
The City of Warm Springs contracted with EMI to perform feasibility studies to
determine the best solution for radium removal, and subsequent permitting,
funding, and design. EMI conducted an extensive Pilot Study on site, and the test
results were prepared and submitted to Georgia EPD. Georgia EPD concluded
that the Greensand Filtration is a viable option to reduce radium levels as
recommended by EMI.
EMI also assisted the City in procuring grant funding with the Department of
Community Affairs, CDBG Program. EMI subsequently developed final design
and construction plans to add the filtration system, necessary chemical feeds, and
hydraulic upgrades to retrofit the City’s existing treatment facility at the Cold
Springs.
